The places were rooms

Los Angeles is not one place. Hollywood, downtown, Venice, the east side. The postcard already has those names. The City is the shorter map: the rooms the night actually uses, close enough that an evening can still be one neighborhood.

The beat scene did not relocate. It thinned out. What is left is a handful of rooms on the east side, close enough to each other that a night can still be one neighborhood. Downtown has the larger stages. The west side has the industry. Neither is the point of this page.

Lincoln Heights.

The Airliner is at 2419 Broadway. Low End Theory ended here on August 8, 2018, and the building went quiet after that. It is a room again now, restaurant downstairs, music upstairs, open Wednesday through Sunday. It is not the old night. Go for the room, not for the memory. The memory is on The Scene.

Highland Park.

Lodge Room is the second floor at 104 North Avenue 56. A Masonic hall, a few hundred people, the kind of bill that used to need a Wednesday and now needs a ticket. Stones Throw has used it. The label’s office has been on this side of the city for years. If you only add one current room to the map, add this one.

Frogtown.

Zebulon is at 2478 Fletcher Drive. Smaller than Lodge Room, and better for the night that is not an event. Jazz, left-field bills, the sort of set that used to be the openers at the Airliner. The address is the point. Fletcher, not a district brochure.

What this page will not do.

No crawl of Silver Lake. No list of beaches, markets, and hillside homes. Koreatown, Venice, and South LA are part of the city. They are not this page. A longer version can hold them. This one holds the rooms.

The sound, if you have not read it, is on The Beat. The work around the rooms is on The Culture.
